About this film

Balagopalan, a schoolteacher played by Mammootty, lives under his family's belief that a mentally unstable relative will always be present in each generation, a role currently filled by his uncle, in this 1987 Malayalam-language film directed by Sibi Malayil and written by A.K. Lohithadas. When the uncle dies, the family assumes Balagopalan will be next. The film examines superstition, mental illness, and the decline of matrilineal Nair joint families. Thilakan, who plays the uncle, won a Kerala State Film Award.
