About this film

Thalapathi, directed by Mani Ratnam and released in 1991, is loosely based on the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana from the Mahabharata. Rajinikanth plays Surya, a man raised in the slums who befriends Deva, played by Mammootty, and becomes his commander, while a district collector works to break up their partnership. Ilaiyaraaja composed the score in his final collaboration with Ratnam, and the film was, at the time, the most expensive South Indian production ever made.
