About this film

Ridley Scott directs this epic drama, starring Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general betrayed by Commodus, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, after Commodus murders his father and takes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus becomes a gladiator and fights through the arena in pursuit of revenge. Joaquin Phoenix plays Commodus, with Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed, and Derek Jacobi in supporting roles. The screenplay draws on Daniel P. Mannix's 1958 novel Those About to Die.
