About this film

David Yates directs this 2016 film, the first entry in the Fantastic Beasts series and J.K. Rowling's debut as a screenwriter. Set in 1926, it follows magizoologist Newt Scamander as he arrives in New York carrying a magically expanded briefcase full of creatures. When several escape into the city, American wizarding authorities pursue him, straining relations between magical and non-magical communities. It is a prequel and spin-off to the Harry Potter film series.
