About this book

Rudyard Kipling's 1894 collection of stories is set mostly in the dry forests of central India, around a place he calls Seeonee. Most of its characters are animals, among them Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear, and its best-known figure is Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves. Abandonment and fostering run through the book, as does the tension between law and freedom, in Mowgli's story and in those of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and the white seal.
