About this book

Charles Dickens's second novel follows the orphan Oliver Twist from his birth in a workhouse through his apprenticeship to an undertaker. After running away, he travels to London and falls in with the Artful Dodger and a gang of child pickpockets led by the aging criminal Fagin. The novel was notable for its unsentimental depiction of criminals and for exposing the mistreatment of orphans in the period, satirizing child labor and the use of children as criminals.
