About this book

Khaled Hosseini's 2007 novel follows Mariam, an illegitimate teenager from Herat forced into marriage with a shoemaker in Kabul after a family tragedy, and Laila, born a generation later into a more privileged life. Their paths cross when a second tragedy leads Laila to accept a marriage proposal from Mariam's husband. Hosseini has described the book as a mother-daughter story, in contrast to his debut, The Kite Runner, which he called a father-son story.
